About the Researcher

Jeremy Lovendianto is an architecture researcher and laboratory assistant at the Department of Architecture, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya, where he completed his undergraduate degree in Architecture (2019–2023) and his Master's in Architectural Design (2023–2025). His research sits at the intersection of digital technology, heritage architecture, and place memory. It explores how historical urban villages (kampung) can be represented and re-activated through virtual reality, soundscape, and media architecture, even as their physical form continues to change.

This virtual tour originates from his master's thesis, Media Architecture: Digital Material as Stimulant for Meaning in Kapasan Kungfu Studio Surabaya, Department of Architecture, ITS. The thesis investigates how digital media (virtual, spatial, and sensory) can act as a stimulant to reconstruct and reinforce place meaning in Kampung Kungfu Kapasan, a historic Chinese-diaspora settlement whose physical and social fabric continues to shift. This site builds directly on that research, extending it into a publicly accessible digital placemaking experience. The thesis work is further developed in some related publications listed below.

Beyond his academic work, he writes essays on historical places and cultural heritage across Southeast Asia, including an earlier personal account of this very kampung ("Kungfu Kampoong"), as well as explorations of his own Chinese-Indonesian ancestry and other heritage sites across Java and the region. Those writings are published in his Medium profile.
